Chatfield State Park and Madison Connecticut Creative Engagement Photography | Emmy + Jason

On a warm winter day, the mist filled the air and Emmy and Jason showed up camera ready. We started at Chatfield State Park in Killingworth, CT. After a short walk we found a cute little log cabin which was a perfect place to start shooting. Shortly after we finished at the log cabin the mist in the air started getting thicker to the point it was almost raining so we wrapped up quickly and headed over to R.J Julia Booksellers in Madison.

Emmy had a shot in mind for the bookstore that just made me laugh and I think we pulled off pretty well. Jason is a history teacher so not only was he like a kid in a candy store while we were shooting in the American History section but the dynamic of Emmy reading her fashion magazine off in the corner while Jason sits in the big comfy chair reading the biography of Thomas Jefferson worked perfectly. I took a little artistic license and also did a shot where Emmy sits with her arms crossed a little board while Jason was enthralled with his history book.

We wrapped up shooting with a fantastic cup of hot cocoa and a chocolate cupcake. Thanks for the treat!

Look for Emmy and Jason’s wedding pictures coming this summer!

New Hampshire Winter engagement photography | Melanie + Kyle

Up at the butt crack of dawn, the car is packed with all our photography and snowboarding gear, Monte and I hit the road for a 5hr drive to Mount Washington Hotel for a cold and snowy engagement shoot with Melanie and Kyle.
For the first 4 hours of our drive the sky was clear and full of beautiful puffy clouds but as soon as we started heading into the mountains the clouds rolled in and the snow started falling. Even though it was cloudy and snowing and the temperatures were 7° with a wind chill of -6° we still had fun and managed to capture moments that didn’t look like they were freezing.

Thanks to Monte Rudze for making the trip with me and doing some shooting in the frigged New Hampshire weather.

Check back in about a month for Melanie and Kyles wedding pictures, less than a month to go guys!

Yale New Haven and Sleeping Giant Engagement Photography | Pete + Hannah

It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to do a blog from an engagement session but I felt that even in the middle of all the craziness that is the end of the wedding season, this shoot was special and I am particularly proud of these images.
Very rarely do we do engagement photos for a couple who’s wedding we won’t be shooting but Pete and Hannah are getting married in Oregon where Hannah’s family lives. Pete and Hannah met while attending Yale and since graduating have moved to Boston and were recently engaged. It was their obvious choice to do their engagement photos at Yale and around their dorms. I suggested that we do some shots in a nature scene because of how amazing the foliage was so our first stop was Sleeping Giant State Park in Hamden.

While we hiked up the back of sleeping giant we were just chatting and somewhere in our little conversation we started talking about Mike and my past as professional BMXers, I really don’t know how it came up but I believe I said something to the extent of “I’m kind of a dick.” We all had a big laugh and carried on. Later while we were shooting at Yale I had Pete and Hannah standing across from each other leaning against some pillars and as I was directing them from behind the camera I said “Look at each other, look at me, Hannah look at Pete, look at me, look at each other, look at me” and as they continued to compile with my requests I said “I’m just messing with you” we all spent the next 5 minutes laughing historically then Pete said “I have a new slogan for you guys, BSC Photo… We’re kind of dicks!” Im not sure if this translates or if you had to be there but it was hilarious and Pete and Hannah will go down in history as one of our most favorite couples to date.

We had so much fun spending the day with them and even if they decide they can’t fly us to Oregon for their 2013 wedding, we wish them the best!

Marina + Anton | Engagement Photography at Harkness Park

This weekend I had the pleasure to hang out and photograph Marina and Anton at Harkness Memorial Park in Waterford. It is always such a great experience to shoot couples like them.
This was my first time at Harkness Park and even though we were dodging the rain the entire time I was excited to keep shooting. Marina and Anton were so good in front of the camera all I had to do was put them in a place and sit back and capture the love.

Keep a look out for Marina and Anton’s wedding pictures late this fall.

Worthington Ponds | Rustic CT Engagement Photography

I am so pleased to be a preferred vendor at Worthington Ponds in Somers, CT. We’ve met some really amazing couples because of them and Sarah and Tyler are one of them. Living in Chicago has made it difficult for us to get together for their engagement shoot but thankfully while they were in town for the holidays our schedules worked out. Yesterday Mike Ciarleglio and I drove 1hr 15min up to Somers hoping the whole ride that the rain would hold off.

There are so many different cool spots at Worthington I try to switch it up each time. Yesterday we photographed Sarah and Tyler at the Maple Syrup building, the front barn and the Worming House.

Thanks to the owner of Worthington, Dan Roulier and his two dogs we are given the royal treatment every time we shoot there. And thanks to mother nature for holding off the rain till literally the second we started the car to drive away.

A Week of Creative Engagement Photography

In the past week I’ve been swamped with editing and engagement shoots. I shouldn’t be complaining because every engagement shoot is a wedding I get to do next year but it’s just made this one really long tough week.
Last Thursday on a crappy rainy day I headed up to Waterbury to Cathy and Aaron’s favorite bar to try to pull off an engagement session. Shortly after I got set up and started shooting, the rain stopped, the sun popped out and the sky looked awesome so we abandoned the bar shoot and hit the streets of Waterbury. We walked and shot for about 45 minutes right till the sun set.

The next day I headed up to Essex to a small Yacht Club hidden in the woods, down a small, flooded dirt road to meet up with Rebecca and Mike. I was really excited for this shoot because Rebecca and Mike decided they wanted to do a stop motion engagement video. I have been waiting for the chance to do another one of these for nearly a year now. Mike C. and I had a number of shots planned out but not having seen the location ahead of time we had to scrap most of them and shoot from the hip (so to speak). Mike and Rebecca did so amazing, they followed my directions perfectly and really took it into their own hands and made some great sequences.

We got back to the studio at about 8:30pm and I got right to work batch editing and starting the search for the right song. Over the next 6 days I put in nearly 50hrs of work getting this together. On Monday the video was mostly done and we decided to do a title sequence with some red boat rope we had laying around the studio. I set up the camera on our scaffolding, rolled out the white paper and started snapping as Lindsay (from Creative Supply Co.) moved that red rope a few inches at a time. Over 500 frames later we had the groundwork laid for the coolest title sequence ever.
One funny note about this shoot: While we were shooting on the dock the sailboat flipped over. Mike and Rebecca were able to quickly right it.

On the days leading up to Wednesday I was concerned yet again that this engagement shoot would be rained out but when I walked outside on Wednesday morning and saw the amazing clouds in the sky I got really psyched. I headed up to Gouveia Vineyards in Wallingford to meet up with Lindsay and Colin. At first they were a little concerned with how to act in front of the camera but with a little guidance they drew their attentions to each other and the images started making themselves. We were a little late in the year for full lush grape vines but Gouveia Vineyards has some really nice locations.
